Indestructible doors made of HPL

HPL Doors

HPL is an artificial and versatile surface for doors. It is mainly used where there is intensive use and stress on the surface because apartment entrance doors and interior doors with an HPL surface are particularly robust and can cope with the most demanding requirements.

What is HPL?

HPL stands for High-Pressure Laminate and is also referred to as “decorative laminate.” HPL consists of resin-coated cellulose webs (core paper), overlay paper, and melamine-coated decor paper. The cellulose webs are used as the core layer, and the overlay paper increases abrasion resistance. As colored or printed paper, the decorative paper determines the design of the decorative laminated panel.

HPL = High Pressure Laminate

How are HPL doors made?

HPL is produced by pressing several layers of paper with hardening synthetic resin under high pressure. The surface is coated with a protective film made of melamine resin. The decorative laminate panels with the melamine resin top layer are between 0.5 and 2.0 mm thick depending on the quality and are applied to the interior structure of the door.

Since heat-resistant resins are used in production, the finished panels can withstand high temperatures for short periods without being damaged. The high pressure creates a closed, non-porous surface.

A surface structure can be embossed with the help of an embossing plate, e.g., a wood pore or a parchment structure. In this way, authentic wood grains can be created.

Advantages of HPL doors

HPL doors can withstand extremely high loads and are used in buildings where doors are used frequently, such as in kindergartens, schools, hospitals, and offices. Doors with an HPL surface are convincing for their variety of design options and outstanding properties.

  • Scratch, impact, and abrasion-resistant
  • Heat resistant
  • Easy to maintain
  • Odorless
  • Resistant to stains and light
  • Resistant to common household chemicals
  • Insensitive to alcohol
  • Extremely hard-wearing and robust

The difference between CPL and HPL

Like CPL doors, HPL doors are among the very robust types of doors. However, in contrast to the CPL surface, HPL has a significantly higher resistance due to the discontinuous production. This makes HPL doors even less sensitive to many chemicals. Fingerprints, dirt, or boiling water leave no traces on an HPL door.

Color and Design of HPL doors

Different HPL doors designs

Since you can imitate almost any design when manufacturing an HPL, your imagination has no limits when designing an HPL door. In addition to simple decors, such as white or gray, striking uni colors can also be selected. It doesn’t matter whether it’s rich green or bright yellow – the HPL door serves as a real eye-catcher.

Monochrome HPL doors

The decorative paper allows HPL doors to be made with almost any design. Both simple, white surfaces and bright uni colors or authentic wood grains in a longitudinal and transverse look.

The advantage of all prints: the colors will not darken.

HPL doors with wood look

HPL doors with wood look

HPL doors are available with authentic patterns in various wood looks. Almost every wood look, such as beech, oak, maple, or walnut, is artificially produced using a printing process in its grain and color. The grain is available in both longitudinal and transverse looks. While wood grain in a longitudinal look is one of the classic designs, the transverse look is considered a modern feature.

Maintenance and cleaning of HPL doors

If HPL doors are slightly soiled, they can be cleaned with a damp cloth. You can also use clear water or a non-abrasive household cleaner to remove dirt if necessary.

To remove particularly stubborn stains or streaks – such as those caused by tar, wax crayons, or waterproof felt-tip pens – pure alcohol is effective for cleaning. This can be applied with a soft, clean cloth. Waxes, polishes, and abrasives should be avoided.

When do I need an HPL door?

HPL doors are robust and suitable for rooms with intensive use. Many colors and looks of the HPL surface ensure HPL doors for every style: in bright colors for the daycare center, in a homely wood decor for hospitals, and a discreet look for the doctor’s office.

HPL doors are particularly suitable for:

  • Kindergartens
  • Schools
  • Hospitals
  • Offices and medical practices
  • Commercial premises
